The meaning and origin of the word Nepal

Answers---

1. Which region was known as Nepal in ancient times?

Answer 👉: In ancient times, Nepal was only known as Kathmandu Valley and the area around it.

2. Which of the various linguistic bases for the naming of Nepal do you think is appropriate? Give a reason.

Answer 👉 : Among the various linguistic bases related to the naming of Nepal, I found the base that Nepal was formed from 'Nepa' of the Newari language to be appropriate. Here 'ne' means 'middle or between' and 'pa' means 'country'. In ancient times, Nepal was only known as Kathmandu Valley and the area around it. There is already a thick settlement of Newars in this place. Therefore, among the various linguistic bases related to the naming of Nepal, the base of Newari language seemed suitable to me. Or I found it appropriate that the word Nepal originated from the Sanskrit language. There is an argument that 'Nepal' was formed by combining 'Nip:' and 'Alay:' of this language. Nepal is also known as the legendary country. Sanskrit is also the oldest language. Nepal is also the base of Hindu religion and Sanskrit language. So this base seemed suitable to me.

3. Prove the fact that the land of Nepal was sacred from the beginning by giving various grounds.

Answer 👉 : It has been mentioned in Nepal Mahatmya that the name Nepal came to be because it was a land that was followed by a monk named 'Ne'. What this confirms is that Nepal has been a place of penance for sages since ancient times. The word 'Newal' has been used in Buddhist texts. It can be assumed that the word Nepal originates from this word, which is used by people who believe in Kirant and Buddhism. In the same way, the meaning of Nepal in Lepcha language is holy cave. There is also an argument that 'Nepal' was formed by combining 'Nip:' and 'Alay:' of Sanskrit language. Based on all these facts, it is proved that the land of Nepal was already sacred.
